By repurposing rudimentary materials of overhead projectors and aluminum foil, the project space is transformed into a homespun planetarium that shifts with the presence of the audience - an array of “stars” are projected on the moving figures while their shadows interact with the “night sky”. Above/Below references both the intensity of the night sky that our urban location restricts and also harkens to a prehistoric picture of stars as punctures in the mythological fabric of a night sky. The result is a phenomenological experience of light and shadow that reveals a latent capacity of the makeshift. The seed imagery for videos from series Black Sun is dominated by the desert. It represents a particularly liminal space as it is one of either nothingness or inherent possibility. The photograms functioned in the space as alternative moments that may have been in the video, but instead held a space as objects. I use the photogram technique because it reflects photography’s history, future, and materiality. A productive uncertainty occurs in the darkroom as I try random filter combinations and use expired paper.
